Black Landlord
"This is a project started by Maxx (formerly of the Goats and Incognegro). It is a TRUE collective. The idea began 4yrs ago with friends and super-electro producers Leonard de Leonard and Olaf Hund. They worked together in Paris and Berlin, writing songs and daydreaming about how to bring talented people together. So, after learning German, some ghetto French and drinking great beer, Maxx returned home to Philly and put a live band together and the end result was a diverse mix of Philly All-Stars."

This weekend - Dr. Fameus (Disco Biscuts) and Last Craft Market of the Season!

Fri, Dec 5th - Village Green and Glass Grenade Productions Presents:

DrFameus (featuring Allen Aucoin of The Disco Biscuits)
"Dr. Fameus, a guru of sound, began natural melody and TBM (Traditional Beat Medicine) in 2001. While surgery and healing beats have been given on a more personal level the doctor is looking forward to treating the masses with his delectable ear candies. Give the doctor a visit."

Random Movement
"The sound of Random Movement is a bit difficult to describe. Samples stand out from a wide variety of old soul/funk/dub/jazz albums, and the overall style of production, writing and orchestration definitely reflects that. The music feels like a hot beach at sunset, like that small club you used to go to back in the day that has long since shut its doors, like the good memories of how things used to be. Deep rolling basslines, good swingin breaks, and 10 tons of soul--Definitely a source of that feel-good vibe. One word seems to get tossed around alot to describe the Random Movement drum and bass sound, and that word is...Deep."

with DJ Ross D and Chris Crompton

Martin Atkins and TOUR:SMART at 941 Sept 21st!

16 Days in China – Martin Atkins and Invisible Records at 941 –
THIS SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 21st - $10 gets admission and a free book or CD!

When Chicago-based musician, producer and label owner Martin Atkins (member of PiL, Pigface, Killing Joke, etc) visited Beijing in the fall of 2006, he had no idea what to expect. What he found was a thriving underground culture of rock bands that reminded him of his time in London in the late '70s, and of the downtown scene in early '80s NYC. He signed several bands while he was there, shot 80 hours of video footage, and rented out High End Sound Studios, where he recorded tracks from well over a dozen bands.

The documentary '16 Days in China' will begin at 6:30pm, and a Q&A will promptly follow the conclusion of the film. At 8:00pm, Mr. Atkins will deliver his Tour:Smart band seminar for two hours followed by Q&A session. Tickets are $10 for the entire event, and include either a free copy of the Tour:Smart eBook, or a free copy of the ‘Look Directly Into The Sun’ compilation CD.

In ‘Tour:Smart’, Atkins talks about his Tour:Smart philosophies and explains his ground breaking theories both on DVD and through his critically-acclaimed book. Subjects as diverse as Routing, Merchandise, How to be a Better Opening Band and even more complex strategies are covered. Whether planning a national tour, or desiring more successful regional shows, this guide is a complete asset.

Philly Inquirer Feature on 941

"A home at last for local directors and their films"

A.D. Amarosi did a great article on the 941 Theater and the state of indie theatrical screenings in Philadelphia!

"A movie theater in an up-and-coming neighborhood that screens independent films you can't see elsewhere and locally produced flicks - at a time when Hollywood banks on big-dollar Iron Men and Kung Fu Pandas?

Sounds like an awesome idea. And that's what's behind the 941 Theater, the bright green building at 941 N. Front St., in the shadow of I-95 and several shiny new Bart Blatstein developments.

In the spirit of indie everything, 941 is not only the first movie theater in Northern Liberties, it's the first non-chain theater to compete with the Ritzes for independent fare - and show local fare."

"They've always been believers who fight for the cause," says Scott Johnston, 41, a Philly film director and animator who curates events for fellow moviemakers on Tuesdays at N. 3rd, a bar in Northern Liberties.

The Gits Trailer

Rumored to have been descended from Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, the incredibly magnetic frontwoman had a powerful, soulful voice that belied her inherent shyness and distinguished The Gits from other punk bands of that day.

This riveting documentary is part musical history and part murder mystery, brimming with rare performance footage dating from their Antioch College days through their subsequent move to Seattle just before the world's ears suddenly tuned into the emerging northwest music scene. The Gits would become an integral and influential part of the milieu if largely unsung in comparison to fellow Seattle bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden. But just as they were about to make it big, the band was dealt a mighty blow with the sudden, violent loss of their friend and band member whose lyrics eerily foreshadowed events to come.

Mia's murder became a rallying point for seattle music scene, as the investigation ripped through the community with devastating results, leaving many female musicians feeling momentarily disempowered before turning their insecurity into anger and into a statement that would resonate with women the world over. A celebration of Mia's life as well as a comprehensive testament to the band's greatness as a whole. The film's interviews reflect the enormous respect and love Mia's peers had for her, and also the sadness over her absence that still haunts them today.

Girls Rock!

Friday, July 11 7pm reception, 8pm movie

The Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls is a place where 8-18 year olds come from all over the country to learn Rock DIY-style--forming bands, writing songs and building community, and “Girls Rock!” is the movie about their journey.

The primary subjects of “Girls Rock!” are Laura, an articulate adopted Korean obsessed with death metal; Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth-addiction, homelessness and gang activity; Palace, a sweet-seeming 8-year-old with a heavy metal sneer, and Amelia, who's writing a 14-song cycle about her dog Pippi. Forming bands, writing songs and playing a gig in one week, these girls and the rest of the camp engage in an experiment in empowerment that will leave no-one unchanged.

In meeting these four children, the filmmakers discovered what many books and studies have already described—girls are struggling with a bewildering and heartbreaking array of challenges to their self-image. Everything from eating disorders to drugs to sexual harassment have made girlhood a virtual battlefield. The filmmakers were happy to find in the camp a place where, in the words of former Camp Assistant Director Jen Agosta, "it is 100% ok to be exactly who you are." What happens to the girls as they are given a temporary reprieve from being sexualized, analyzed and pressured to conform, is truly exhilarating. The act of picking up a guitar and making noise becomes a truly revolutionary act.

As the final performance for over 700 people draws near, the girls are thrown into a paroxysm of excitement and self-discovery, achieving things they never thought possible. Through video diaries, verite footage, revealing interviews, and issue-driven animations, filmgoers will transform right along with the girls.

The Gits

Saturday, July 5 - Friday, July 11

Philly Weekly: Film Takes a Backseat

Film Takes a Backseat

A new indie theater prepares to open in Northern Liberties.

“I went to film school at Temple, and I was really infuriated that I couldn’t show my thesis film in their fucking movie theater. It was showing Saving Private Ryan and not my movie,” says 30-year-old filmmaker Zafer Ülkücü, one of four producers who make up Backseat Conceptions, an independent production company that moved to Northern Liberties from New York five years ago.

Best known for their raucous indie-driven Backseat Film Festival, the filmmaking forces behind Backseat—which include Ülkücü and producers Nick Esposito and Doug Sakmann with partner Jack Verrelli—know all too well the uphill battle facing small-budget filmmakers. And with a little support from the Philly film community and a lot of persistence, they’re doing something to help.

In roughly two months Ülkücü and his partners will open the first independent movie theater in Philadelphia in more than 10 years—in a bare-bones former nightclub at 941 N. Front St. To get to the building—tentatively called the 941 Theater—patrons might have to cross under a highway or pass a few ominous abandoned buildings, one of which stands directly next door. But they’re hoping potential patrons won’t be daunted.

“There are hundreds of movies made every year that don’t make it to the Ritz, but are better than straight to video,” says Ülkücü, who programs the Backseat Film Festival and will be the head programmer of the new theater. “In New York there are four or five theaters that can show those movies, and in Philly there’s not.”

“It’s easier now to make movies and see movies, but it’s really hard to see films in the proper presentation, with good sound—not just a home theater,” adds Esposito. “We want to show excellent films, done by professionals, just on a small scale.”

That’s the main concept behind 941—a place for small-budget independent filmmakers to exhibit their work, and for film lovers to enjoy movies in a communal setting. The theater will show films hand-picked from all over the world, but it will also be open to local artists and filmmakers to exhibit their work.

But Backseat wants to make it clear: “This is not the drinking man’s theater,” says Sakmann, referencing their festival’s unofficial moniker. The theater will sell traditional concessions, and no alcohol—though complimentary drinks will be offered at some events.

“You’d never see that at the Ritz,” says Ülkücü.

Inside 941’s intimate screening room will be three levels of chairs, with barstools in the back, all facing a free-standing screen. Films will be shown on HD video, with the goal of purchasing a 4K projection system when the technology becomes more widespread—and affordable—a few years down the road.

With the theater, Backseat hopes to help cultivate a larger film production community in Philadelphia—a goal that undoubtedly attracted the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, which has worked closely with the company over the last year to get the business off the ground.

“One of the reasons why [so few people] want to make a $500,000 movie here is, where are you gonna show it?” asks Ülkücü. “We definitely feel like the production and theatrical exhibition communities in Philadelphia both have to grow. We’re trying to do our part.”

They’ve had some additional help—particularly in their efforts to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood. Councilman Frank DiCicco had two new streetlights put up outside the theater’s entrance, and is working to have the condemned building next door torn down. Owners of the parking lot behind the building have also agreed to open their 70-car lot to theater patrons.

“We’re taking this kind of scary cobblestone street, and we’re putting a bright space there,” says Esposito.

But attracting business remains a concern.

“I think they’ll be able to sustain themselves because they’re not trying to run a seven-day-a-week movie theater,” says Bernard Neary, owner of the Roxy—the last independent theater to open in Philly—and Backseat’s attorney. “The fact that they’re willing to take a flexible space and be flexible with the operation is going to help them.”

Neary says that because of distribution deals, it’s difficult for other independent theaters to show movies that are playing at one of the Ritzes, and those movies tend to be the most marketable independent films available.

“So we have one national company that has a stranglehold on the independent film business in Philadelphia,” he says. “And unless something drastic happens, that’s the way it’s going to be.”

Ülkücü and co. hope their new theater is just that drastic happening.

About the 941 Theater

The 941 Theater is an independent theater space; the main use is for movie screenings augmented by occasional live theater and music performances. There are not many places in Philadelphia like this and we are certainly the only Movie Theater serving the Northern Liberties, Fishtown, Kensington and Port Richmond areas. We plan to breathe new life into the neighborhood and film community with our theater space.

The bulk of our programming will be first run independent feature films. In addition we will have the ability to host community based events, screenings from local university students and filmmakers and other events that would bring culture to Northern Liberties.

Outside of the regular screening schedule, we are working with local production companies and artists to bring a diverse blend of programming to the 941 Theater. Our first non-film event will be the Big Art Show on Saturday, April 26th, an all day art celebration featuring over 40 artists from all over Philadelphia. We will also be hosting established film programmers both local and national to bring the finest screening selections from around the world.

For the film production industry, the 941 Theater will be available for Film/Video Dailies Screenings with space for full crew and catering, cast and crew screenings, press screenings, Film, video & arts instructional seminars, Ongoing Art or Video Gallery/Installations.

We all agree that film production is good for the economy and the culture of the city. We picture a Philadelphia where film productions of all sizes can be self sustaining: reinforcing the production industry and labor pool. Additionally we picture the 941 Theater as a national destination for first run screenings for the dynamic new cinema of the twenty first century.

The 941 Theater will provide access for the people of Northern Liberties and all of Philadelphia to a broader variety of films by programming films that are not available here because there is no venue for them. Thousands of independent films are released to American and International theaters every year, but unfortunately only a small percentage of those films are screened in Philly.

The 941 Theater has received written support from the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, 1st District Councilman Frank DiCicco, State Representative Mike O’Brien, The Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association as well as several local businesses and artists.

About the 941 Theater Founders:
For the last six years the 941 Theater partners have been producing the Backseat Film Festival with semi-annual events in Philadelphia (Roxy Theater, Triangle Theater), New York (Pioneer Theater) and Baltimore (Creative Alliance Performance Space). Additionally, Backseat Conceptions has been doing business in Philadelphia as a production company for five years and have a good reputation with local film fans as well as vendors who would benefit from a new independent theater in Northern Liberties.
